The long- standing belief that the meaning of a word can stand on its own and is separable from the context has been challenged. The meaning takes its form when other words combine or by the accumulation of words, i.e., word-word collocation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Collocations refer to a pair or group of words that are frequently merged. The best choice of words for combination will give strength to the word-word collocation. While they sound right to native English speakers, they may sound unnatural to others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Check out the examples below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     <\/em> <\/em>\u2018heavy rains\u2019 and not \u2018strong rains\u2019  – The city experienced heavy rains today.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u2018tall building\u2019 and not \u2018high building\u2019 \u2013 My apartment is a very tall building.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite being considered unacceptable by natives, we have been using \u2018heavy rain\u2019 and \u2018tall building\u2019 as they sound right to our ears. Collocations as the examples above combine to form a phrase.  Some collocations are fixed or strong expressions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A phrase is a group of words that can be put together to make a sentence. A phrase is two or more words that are related to each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did you know that phrases play a very important role in making various types of conversations meaningful? A great way to start speaking English is to learn phrases, without thinking about the grammar aspect. Some phrases and expressions help us to deal with common situations like a native English speaker. Situational phrases are very useful in communication and make it very expressive. A few examples of situation-based phrases are given below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Example 1:<\/strong> Consider a situation where you have to thank someone for helping you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can say as a simple sentence, \u2018Thanks so much for driving me home.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, \u2018Thanks so much\u2019 is the phrase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make it more effective by using the phrase \u2018I really appreciate\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Thanks so much for driving me home. I really appreciate your help.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Example 2:<\/strong> Or if you had to suggest an idea or plan and want to discover what others think. A simple phrase used for this situation would be \u2018How does that sound?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018We could have dinner at 6, and then go for a movie. How does that sound?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Example 3: <\/strong>Or what if you had to interrupt someone in a nice and polite way? You could say: \u2018Sorry to interrupt\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am sorry to interrupt but I have to be somewhere in an hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sorry to interrupt but may I ask a question?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phrases help us to communicate in a natural and effective way. They improve our style of speech and facilitate clear understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, let\u2019s embark on an interesting journey of learning the various types of phrases!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Classification of phraseology<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Compound noun phrase<\/strong>: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A compound noun phrase is made up of two words, but each word or compound has a single meaning. Compound nouns are usually two nouns put together. The meaning of the whole compound noun is often different from the individual meaning of the two words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example: teapot, pancake, ice cream, fish tank, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Compound nouns can be written:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 -as one word <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  Example: teapot, snowflake<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-as two words<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Example: post office, fire engine<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-with a hyphen<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Example: lamp-post, air-conditioner<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phrasal Verbs:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phrasal verbs are phrases that indicate actions. Often used in spoken English, using phrasal verbs correctly will help you to sound natural in casual conversation. Phrasal verbs often have more than one meaning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example:\u00a0 The phrasal verb \u2018pass out\u2019, which means to \u2018fall asleep\u2019 or become \u2018unconscious\u2019 has a very different meaning from the verb \u2018pass\u2019. Given below is another example of the various phrasal verbs using\u00a0 \u2018Get\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We can see that phrasal verbs always occur together and the order of the word never changes.   <\/strong><\/strong>        <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phrasal Idioms and Proverbs:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Idioms are word combinations that have a different meaning than the real meaning of each word or phrase. Idioms are phrases and not complete sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Example:   \u2018Cross your fingers\u2019<\/strong>  is an idiom for  \u2018good luck\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

     <\/strong> <\/strong>  <\/strong><\/strong>\u2018<\/strong>Let the cat out of the bag\u2019<\/strong> <\/strong>stands for \u2018to tell a secret\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Proverbs are group of words that usually give advice.  Proverbs are sentences. Many are very old and have an interesting history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                                  \u201cA stitch in time saves nine<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meaning of the proverb is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 We have to fix a problem when it is small than to wait and let it become a bigger problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

             \u201cGod helps those who help themselves<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We shouldn\u2019t just wait for good things to happen. We should work hard to achieve our goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phrasal Similes:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A simile is a figure of speech that directly compares two different things. The simile is a group of words that begins with the words \u2018as\u2019 or \u2018like\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example:  Similes like \u2018as gentle as a lamb\u2019 <\/em><\/strong>which means \u2018vey gentle\u2019 can be<\/em> <\/em><\/strong>used in sentences like<\/em> \u2018She looked as gentle as a lamb.\u2019<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again,<\/em> \u2018as wise as an owl\u2019 <\/em><\/strong>which means \u2018very wise or intelligent\u2019 can be used in sentences like<\/em> \u2019my sister is as wise as an owl.\u2019<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Using similes in your conversations will make you sound more clear and descriptive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jargons and Clich\u00e9s:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jargons are expressions that are used by people in a particular field or profession like doctors, lawyers, businessmen, politicians, military etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Examples of business jargons:  \u201cteam work<\/strong>\u201d, \u201ccore competency<\/strong>\u201d, \u201cdue diligence<\/strong>\u201d etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Examples of jargons used by lawyers: \u201ccourt<\/strong>\u201d, \u201caffidavit<\/strong>\u201d, \u201clegal<\/strong>\u201d, \u201ccase<\/strong>\u201d, \u201cfinal judgement<\/strong>\u201d etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

   Clich\u00e9s are phrases that have been used so often that it is no longer original or effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example: \u2018as red as a rose\u2019, \u2018beat around the bush\u2019, \u2018fit as a fiddle\u2019.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fixed or formulaic expressions:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fixed or formulaic expressions are words and phrases used in everyday situations to communicate for different purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Example:  Fixed expressions to show good manners and polite behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                              \u2018Good morning\u2019<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

                                \u2018How are you?\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            <\/em> <\/em>                  \u2018I am fine, thank you\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

These expressions of greeting, permission, gratitude etc., are very helpful in our day-to-day life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus, the spectrum or variety of phraseology is many and can be used in a lot of interesting ways to improve our language for a natural and easy communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
